A 32-0 shutout of the Fairland Junior Dragons last Thursday clinched a tie for the title last week, and the Junior Hornets will go for the outright championship this Thursday at Rock Hill.

The Junior Hornets faced a stiff challenge the first half, failing to score until 23 seconds remained in the second quarter when Ryan Turvey hit Jeremy Jenkins with a 59-yard touchdown pass. Turvey ran for the conversion and it was 8-0 at the half.

Coal Grove came back out the second half and took control on the first series, marching 65 yards in seven plays capped by Turvey’s 21-yard touchdown pass to Steven Hern. Cody Chaffin ran for the extra points and it was 16-0.

Fairland fumbled at its own 27 on the next series. Two plays later Chaffin raced 24 yards for the touchdown. Bryan Massie added the conversion and it was 24-0.

Another Fairland fumble set up another Coal Grove scoring opportunity.

Again it took the Hornets just two plays to score, this time with Chaffin bolting 21 yards for the touchdown. Turvey found Jenkins on the conversion pass and it was 32-0 as the third quarter ended and the reserves finished up.

Coal Grove was led offensively by Turvey who hit 3-of-7 passing for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Chaffin had another strong night as he rushed 18 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

Offensively, the Hornets racked up 213 yards rushing and 293 total yards.

The defense gave another solid performance by allowing just 51 yards rushing and 34 passing. Jenkins had seven tackles and Jimmy Lemon and Turvey five each to lead effort.
