Emergency crews responded to the accident shortly after the call at 11:43 a.m., Ohio Highway Patrol dispatchers said.

Thomas Kimmle, 52, of Pedro was driving a 1989 Buick LeSabre when it hit a 1988 Ford Thunderbird driven by 34-year-old William Pancake of Ironton, OHP trooper Rob McClelland said.

"The Ford Thunderbird was stopped in the northbound lane on 93, waiting to make a left turn onto Township Road 108 (McGinney’s Ford Road)," he said. "The Thunderbird was struck in the rear by the northbound Buick."

McClelland said the impact of the Buick forced the Thunderbird left-of-center and caused it to strike two southbound cars.

"It struck a southbound 1990 Honda Accord driven by Gregory Herbert, 48, of Oak Hill," he said. "After striking the Honda, the momentum of the Thunderbird then caused it to strike a 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo following directly behind the Honda."

The Monte Carlo was driven by 42-year-old Thomas Cox, who took evasive action to the right of the southbound lane and was struck in the left side by the Thunderbird.

"When the Thunderbird struck the Honda in the left-rear quarter panel, it spun the Honda around (backward) and brought it to rest facing the northbound direction," McClelland said. "The driver of the Honda received no injuries."

The driver of the Thunderbird and a passenger, Scott Raney, 20, of Ironton, were transported to River Valley Health System by Southeast Ohio Emergency Medical Service crews where they were treated and released.

Kimmle, the driver of the Buick, and a passenger, as well as the driver of the Monte Carlo and a passenger, were transported by SEOEMS to King’s Daughters Medical Center for treatment.

Upper Township Volunteer Firefighters assisted emergency personnel on the scene.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. No citations were issued at the time of the crash. Conditions of those injured were unavailable.
