PEDRO – All it took was a little defense. The Rock Hill Redwomen turned a 10-point halftime lead into a lopsided win Monday thanks to a strong defense as they opened the season with a 70-42 rout of the Northwest Lady Mohawks.

The defensive effort enabled Rock Hill to give Amy Hughes a win in her coaching debut.

"I’m not worried about myself. I’m just worried about the team. It was a good opening game. It got us off to a good start," said Hughes.

Miranda Edwards had four steals and Rachel Hartwig swiped the ball three times as Rock Hill outscored Northwest 27-11.

"We finally started playing defense the second half," said Hughes. "Miranda’s four steals and Rachel’s three steals helped that. Our rebounding needs to get better and our defense needs work, but for our first game we played well."

Bobbie Clark led Rock Hill with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Jordan Edwards had 17 points and eight rebounds while Mandy McDonie scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Carrie Puckett led Northwest with 11 points, but star Linnea Elmer was limited to six points.

"Mandy McDonie and Miranda Edwards played really good defense on (Elmer)," said Hughes.

Rock Hill led 16-10 after the first quarter and 31-21 at the break. Clark scored 12 points the third quarter as Rock Hill pulled away to a comfortable 58-32 lead.
