Farming may be, as some say, a dwindling occupation. Yet, in Lawrence County, the economic proceeds from our historic countryside paint a different picture.

State statistical reports show countywide cash receipts of $5.29 million in 1998. That amount might be lower than in previous years but it’s still significant. Agriculture still makes its mark.

Groups like the Lawrence County Farm Bureau, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Grange, they all do a good job reminding us of that, which is good.

Farming has been, and will continue to be, part of Lawrence County.
