"It wasn’t very pretty, but the one positive thing you can say is we won," said Humphreys after the Hornets opened the season Saturday with a 41-23 win over the St. Joe Flyers.

Jason Winters led the Hornets with 14 points and eight rebounds. Ryan Young added eight points, 10 rebounds, and six assists.

Bill Dressel was the only Flyer in double figures with 10 points. Chris Laber added eight points

"Dressel is a good player. After three or four minutes, we put Young on him and he did a pretty good job. He made him work for what he got," said Humphreys.

Winters scored seven points and Young had five points and four assists the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 16-9 lead. Laber had six points to keep the Flyers close.

Coal Grove managed only two points the second quarter and St. Joe drew within 18-16 at the break.

But the Flyers offense disappeared the second half and Winters scored seven more points the last two quarters.

Coal Grove hosts New Boston next Saturday. St. Joe entertains Rock Hill Tuesday.
