Crop Walk is a multi-church walking event held each summer to raise money to fight world hunger.

This year’s crop walk was held June 3. Participants walked some or all of a 5-mile route, raising $6,278 to fight hunger.

Twenty five percent of that money was split between the two food pantries. The remaining 75 percent was sent to the Church World Service to fight hunger worldwide.

Pastor Steven Nierman, committee chairman for Crop Walk, said that some of the funds help disadvantaged people in places like East Timor, Kosovo, North Korea and Indonesia.

And, of course, a lot of the money raised stays right here in Ironton to help families, Nierman said.

Next year’s Crop Walk is already in the planning stages. The walk is expected to begin at 9 a.m. June 2 at Moulton Field, Iron Trails Park.

An organizational meeting to plan the event will be held Jan. 26 at First United Methodist Church. The meeting is open to the public.
