Two teams with opposite records gave similar efforts. Unbeaten Symmes Valley faced winless St. Joe and neither team shot well as the Vikings won 56-42 and improved to 5-0 on the season.

Symmes Valley was 18-of-56 from the field for 32 percent including 16 missed shots in the lane. The Flyers (0-5) made just 14-of-56 floor shots for 25 percent.

"We got the shots we wanted and the people we wanted shooting, they just weren’t going in," Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter said.

"But any time you can go on the road and get a win, you’ve got to be happy. We always have trouble here. If we keep taking the same shots we’re taking, they’re going to start falling."

Justin Myers led the Vikings with 28 points and 18 rebounds. He was 14-of-19 from the line including 12-of-13 the second half. Adam Corn added 10 points and Brad Carpenter had seven rebounds, three assists, and five steals.

Bill Dressel had 28 points, seven rebounds, and two steals to pace the Flyers. Joey Laber grabbed eight rebounds.

Myers scored eight points the first quarter as the Vikings took a 12-4 lead. The lead was 20-11 at the half as the Flyers made just 4-of-27 field goal attempts.

"We shot so poorly and yet we were still down just nine points at the half," Flyers coach Kevin Sheridan said. "What killed us was second chance rebounds. We were only getting one shot."

"We played them even the third quarter and that’s usually our worst quarter," Sheridan said. "Dressel just took over the third quarter."

Dressel scored 14 points in the third quarter as both teams scored 19 points. Myers had seven points in the quarter.

Symmes Valley pulled away to a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter only to have the Flyers chipped away to within nine. But Myers was 7-of-8 from the line to seal the win.

"That was the encouraging thing. We never quit or folded. We got down 13 or 14 points and didn’t give up," said Sheridan.
