WELLSTON – The "D" disappeared. Coach Kevin Sheridan was unhappy to say the least after watching the St. Joe Flyers defensive lapse Thursday night in an 82-45 loss to the Wellston Golden Rockets in the Wellston Holiday tournament.

"We gave up way too many points. That’s ridiculous," said Sheridan. "We didn’t guard anyone from the opening whistle and it didn’t get any better."

St. Joe (0-6) trailed just 19-12 at the end of the first quarter as the Flyers Bill Dressel and Chris Carte combined for 10 points. Josh Davis had 11 points the first quarter

But Wellston used 13 points by Brant Derrow and eight more by Tel Thacker as it outscored the Flyers 29-13 the second quarter to go in front 48-25 at the break.

The Golden Rockets came back to score 24 points the third quarter and build a 62-36 cushion.

"The game was the middle two quarters. We just gave up too many points and had way too many turnovers," Sheridan said. "We didn’t guard anyone from the opening whistle and it didn’t get any better. And Wellston didn’t seem to miss a shot."

Dressel, who had seven points the second quarter, got eight the third quarter.

Dressel led St. Joe with a game-high 23 points. He has Chris Laber with 10 rebounds, Shawn Hacker grabbed nine, and Dressel pulled down eight while getting five steals.

Wellston had three players in double figures. Thacker scored 20, Derrow 18, and Davis 14.
