Early reports put police on the scene of a woman screaming outside the M&M Realty office, at the corner of Railroad Street, McFarland said.

Ambulance crews responded, taking Mrs. Dickens to Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland, Ky.

Her injuries were not life-threatening and she was being evaluated in the emergency room at the hospital, said Trena Middleton, the nursing supervisor.

”She’s alert and oriented. She’s very stable,” Middleton said.

She said she did not know what kind of injuries the victim had received. The hospital listed her condition as serious about noon.

Police said a .38-caliber handgun was recovered from the scene.

No other details were immediately available.

The suspect was being interviewed by police detectives this afternoon.
