The Chesapeake Panthers put together a classic team effort Saturday and stunned the Runny Mede Ravens of Toronto, Canada, in the American Family Insurance National Hoops Classic at Battelle Hall.

"Runny Mede was a pretty talented team, but we played well. Everything they did we did something to counter it," said Panthers coach Norm Persin. "That was a good win for our program."

Chesapeake, 11-0 and ranked eight in the first Associated Press poll, used a collective effort to beat the Ravens.

Anthony Delimpo scored 22 points and had six rebounds to pace Chesapeake and earn team Most Valuable Player honors.

Josh Waugh had 12 points and five rebounds, Bobby Barbour had 11 points, and Zeb Best added 10 points and five rebounds.

"We were pretty consistent the whole game and we had good balance," Persin said.

The Panthers held a commanding 32-21 rebound advantage and shot 57.5 percent from the field (23-of-40).

Emanuel Tekie, the Ravens MVP, had 18 points and four rebounds. Steven Marcetic, a 6-9 center, had seven rebounds but just six points.

Chesapeake jumped out to a 17-7 first quarter lead, and then Waugh scored seven points the second quarter as the lead went to 28-17 at the half.

Chesapeake’s balanced scoring helped push the lead to 44-26 after three quarters. Delimpo had seven points the fourth quarter as the Panthers maintained their cushion.

The Panthers play at Coal Grove Tuesday.
