SOUTH POINT – The showdown was more like a defensive show starring the Chesapeake Panthers.
In a battle for first place in the Ohio Valley Conference, the Panthers turned up the defense en route to a 66-52 win over the South Point Pointers Friday.
Chesapeake limited the Pointers to a mere 27.3 percent shooting night and held them to 22 points over the first three quarters.
"We played well defensively. We’re playing pretty good defense right now," Chesapeake coach Norm Persin said. "To hold them to 22 points over three quarters the way they shoot the ball is pretty good. (Zeb) Best held (Jarred) Perdue to seven points and (Shane) Holsinger had five points until we subbed."
Chesapeake, ranked sixth in the Associated Press Division III poll, is now 13-0 on the season and 4-0 in the OVC. South Point fell to 8-4 and 3-1.
Anthony Delimpo had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Panthers. Aaron Gossett had 18 points and four assists while Josh Waugh scored 14 points.
Perdue finished with 26 points, 18 in the fourth quarter when he began to hit from 3-point range. He hit six 3-pointers for the game and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Holsinger got 14 points and had five assists.
The Panthers were up 15-10 after the first quarter, then built a 32-18 lead by halftime. It was 41-22 after three quarters.
"We didn’t shoot well early. We missed a lot of easy shots. But we were playing good defense, so it didn’t hurt us," Persin said.
Next up for both teams is the Huntington St. Joe Tournament. Chesapeake will play in the small school division and face Tolsia at 9 p.m. Wednesday after Fairland faces St. Joe. South Point plays Thursday night in the large school division.
