RIO GRANDE – Not a bad finish to a good start. The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers began the track season Saturday with a second place finish in the River Valley Invitational.

Wheelersburg had 134.5 points to edge Ironton which finished with 128.5 points. River Valley was third with 83 points, Vinton County fourth at 74, Meigs fifth with 62, and South Gallia sixth.

"I was real pleased. We weren’t sure what everyone could do, but the girls gave it a great effort for the first time out. It gives us a good starting point," Ironton coach Tim Thomas said.

Seniors Christy Lilly and Sarah Herman turned in the top performances for the Lady Tigers.

Lilly won three events as she won the 100 meter dash in 13.5 seconds, the 200 dash in 28.6 seconds, and cleared 4-10 to easily win the high jump.

Herman took first place in the 3200 meter dash with a 14:03 clocking and won the 1600 with a 6:12.1 time.

Sophomore Adrian Hurley took first place in the 800 meters with a 2:43 time.

"Lilly and Herman ran very well. That’s what we’re looking for out of our seniors," said Thomas. "And I was pleased with Hurley. She missed last year with an injury, so that was a nice effort for her first varsity meet."

Depth was a key on the shot put and discus.

In the discus, Ironton was 2-through-5 with Tiffany Preston second at 100-feet, Whitney Medcalf third (91-6), Alfreda McAfee fourth (83-3), and Candace Ferguson fifth (71-10).

Preston was third in the shot put (28-10), Ferguson fourth (27-9), and Medcalf fifth (27-1).

Ironton 400 meter relay team also took first place. Shay Hannon was second in the long jump by less than three inches.
