Behind the two-hit pitching of Jamie Douglas, the South Point Pointers opened up a two game lead in the league race with a 5-0 shutout Monday of the Coal Grove Hornets.

"That was a big win for us. That puts us two ahead right now," Pointers coach Bob Lester said. "Douglas threw pretty good. His curve wasn’t breaking that well, but he battled all the way."

Douglas struck out eight and walked six in going the distance. The only hits were a first inning single to Jarrod Keaton and a seventh inning single by Josh Wheeler.

Keaton pitched well in suffering the loss. He struck out 10, walked four, and gave up just five hits.

South Point is 12-4 and leads the OVC with a 7-1 record. Coal Grove falls to 13-6 overall and 4-3 in the league.

The Pointers got a run in the first when Jarred Perdue singled, stole second, went to third on Brian Cremeans’ ground out, and scored on Shane Holsinger’s squeeze bunt.

The lead went to 3-0 in the third inning.

Perdue was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, Cremeans walked and stole second, and both scored on a single by Douglas.

The final two runs scored in the fifth.

Cremeans walked, stole second, and scored when Douglas doubled. Justin Eaches followed with a run-scoring single.

Douglas was 2-for-2, Eaches and Perdue 1-for-2, and Holsinger 1-for-3.

In non-league games Tuesday, the Pointers host Russell, Ky., while Coal Grove entertains Portsmouth.
