When Warren tried to steal second base in the bottom of the seventh to get the potential winning run in scoring position, Baise gunned the runner down for the final out to end the game and preserve the Lady Pointers 3-2 Division II district semifinals win Tuesday.

South Point was leading 3-0 going into the bottom of the seventh when Warren rallied.

With one out, Jennifer Coffman walked. After a comebacker for the second out, Tessa Nelson doubled to score Coffman. Kasia Markey singled to score Nelson, but Markey tried to steal second and Baise threw her out to end the game.

"We really played well defensively," Lady Pointers coach Jan Keatley said. "Sarah Baise made a great play to end the game.

"But we did that the whole game. When they got runners on thrid base, they didn’t score. Sometimes Tara (Layne) would get a strikeout. Allison Perdue made fantastic catch in center one time, and Nikki Layne made a great diving stop to throw out a girl and end a rally. She looked like a crab crawling on the ground."

Layne struck out eight, walked two, and gave up just five hits to get the win.

"Tara pitched really well. She walked one in the seventh and they got a double on a fly ball, so that made everyone a little nervous," Keatley said.

The Lady Pointers also had five hits with Baise going 2-for-3, Perdue 1-for-3, Brandi Thacker 1-for-4, and Nikki Layne 1-for-3.

South Point got all its runs in the third.

Katherine Johnnson reached on an error, went to second on a Sarah Stevens bunt single. Thacker singled home Johnson and, after a double steal, Allison Perdue singled home two runs.

Carrie Lang took the loss for Warren (18-7) as she struck out five and did not walk a batter.

South Point, 24-3, plays Sheridan at 5 p.m. Friday in the district finals.

Sheridan, 17-6, blanked Hillsboro 4-0 Monday. The Lady Generals have three shutouts in three tournament games.
