"We’ve had some conversations with the team working with Intermet," Ironton Mayor Bob Cleary said.

There have been at least two meetings, so the property where Intermet’s plant used to stand along Third Street has become a possibility for a future industrial park, the mayor said.

"They’ve been talking about selling it, which is good news because the last thing we want is 25 acres of empty land in Ironton," Cleary said.

Plans for developing the South Ironton Industrial Park at the former AlliedChemical property adjacent to Lorain Street and Third Street remain in limbo because of the likely-failed Honeywell (which took over Allied) and General Electric merger.

The city could seek the former Intermet property once the company completes demolition and cleanup. The $225,000 in state grant money, as well as other funds, can be used for an industrial park at a site other than the Honeywell location, Cleary said.

"So, we’re not just sitting here waiting and doing nothing," he said.
