Collins qualifes for Western Amateur field

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. – The qualifying is complete and the field set for the 2001 Western Amateur.

Some 250 golfers tried to qualify for the field at Hampshire Country Club and Lake Michigan Hills on Monday.

Of those nearly 250 who attempted to qualify for the tournament, which begins Wednesday at the Point ‘Woods Golf and Country Club near Benton Harbor, 46 advanced to the first round.

At Hampshire County Club, 21 players advanced, the last five in a six-man playoff.

At Lake Michigan Hills, 25 players advanced, including two from a 13-man playoff.

Stephen Jones of Grand Blanc and Andrew Price of Lake Forest, Ill. tied for medalist honors at Hampshire after shooting 69.

The same score was recorded by Justin Collins of Ironton, Ohio, at Lake Michigan Hills.

A field of 156 golfers will tee it up on Wednesday at the Point for two days of competition.

The field will be narrowed to the top 50 plus ties following play on Thursday.

Those players will play 36 holes on Friday before the field is cut to the Sweet 16. Play continues on Saturday and Sunday.
