You can see several different species of trees while traveling on the county’s roads. Different types of pines, oaks, elms and traveling on County Road 55 – if you look hard enough – you can see three banana trees growing in the Southern Ohio sun. No, Perry Township isn’t exactly the Caribbean, but at Sherman Allen’s home three banana trees have started to produce some fruit for the former construction contractor. Allen received the first tree as a gift for working on a project. Last year, he took two offshoots from the plant and started new trees. Allen said he takes the trees out in the summer, but the remainder of the time he keeps the plants in the basement of his home where the temperature and humidity stays within a range the plants can tolerate. This year, Allen explained, is the first year the main tree started bearing fruit. Pictured above are bananas growing from the adult tree.
