If you never served in the armed forces, but know a veteran, you are aware they usually have many fascinating stories to tell. If you are a veteran yourself, chances are you like to share your stories about your days in the military with other veterans.

The Veterans Memorial Committee, the Briggs Lawrence County Public Library and the Lawrence County Historical Society want to hear these stories. They want everybody else to hear them as well.

Through a cooperative effort, these agencies have embarked on a mission to compile an oral history of Lawrence County veterans. The library and volunteers from the other organizations will seek veterans, contact them and record their stories to share with the public. The recordings, along with photographs and documents and a book of the stories, will be displayed in the library’s Hamner Room and other public places throughout the county.

Some veterans would just as soon forget some of their military experiences, which we understand. But for those of you who would like to help enlighten some of us on what it was like to serve in the military this is the perfect opportunity. There are many ears out there that would like to hear these stories.

Anyone who would like to share their story or volunteer for the project, call Martha Kounse at 532-4368.
