According to Sheriff Tim Sexton, Anthony Callicoat, 30, of Scottown was at a residence in the Coal Grove area Saturday night when police received a domestic dispute call.

Coal Grove police were the first to respond to the scene, and Callicoat fled in a 1981 Toyota Celica, Sexton said.

Allegedly, Callicoat had a shotgun and was slamming the gun against his car when it accidentally discharged, he said. Sexton said all evidence leads police to believe the gunshot was accidental and not pointed at anyone.

Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Callicoat was traveling west on County Road 24 when he entered a curve, hit an embankment and went airborne. Police said when he landed the vehicle went end-over-end. Police said no other vehicles were involved and Callicoat was not being pursued by police.

Callicoat was sent to King’s Daughters’ Medical Center and treated for injuries. He was charged by the Sheriff’s Department for domestic violence and having a weapon under disability.
