An Ironton-area man is being held in the Lawrence County Jail on a $10,000 cash/property bond after a failed armed robbery attempt at a rural convenience store Saturday evening.
Rickie Pauley, 41, of 347 Township Road 245 E, has been charged with aggravated robbery after an incident at the Pine Tree Carryout, located at 9147 State Route 93 in Elizabeth Township.
Pauley was arraigned in Ironton Municipal Court Monday and will return to court for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. Thursday. Judge Clark Collins appointed Pauley an attorney.
According to Sheriff Tim Sexton, Pauley allegedly entered the store, got alcoholic beverages out of a cooler and then told the clerk to hand over the money in the cash register. Sexton said the subject was armed with a tire iron. Pauley also reportedly told the store clerk he had a firearm, the sheriff said.
As Pauley was attempting to leave with the money, others entered the store and "a physical confrontation" ensued between Pauley and two of the customers. Sexton said during this struggle the two individuals were able to wrestle Pauley to the floor and deputies arrived on the scene shortly thereafter and made the arrest.
"Personally, I’d like to thank those citizens for getting involved," Sexton said without releasing the names of the individuals.
The sheriff said Pauley also gave a statement in connection with another robbery that occurred earlier this month at Tipton’s Mini Mart on State Route 93. Sexton said charges against Pauley are pending in this case as well, but would not elaborate since the case is still under investigation.
