Dedication of the Sergeant Danny C.
Tuesday, October 30, 2001
Dedication of the Sergeant Danny C. Hayes Memorial Highway will take place this weekend in Lawrence County.
The Windsor High School graduation class of 1961 sent a request to the Board of County Commissioners for Lawrence County, and the boards of trustees for Lawrence, Rome and Windsor townships, which kicked off the memorial project, said James H. Tagg, USAF retired, of Port Orange, Fla., who is a former Lawrence County resident and co-chairperson of a committee from the class.
The request was to have Ohio State Route 217 named "The Sergeant Danny C. Hayes Memorial Highway," Tagg said.
Sergeant Hayes was killed in action in Vietnam Sept. 26, 1968. All local governing boards passed a resolution to have Ohio 217 named the "The Sergeant Danny C. Hayes Memorial Highway."
Recently, Tagg received confirmation from Ohio Department of Transportation District 9 that the request had been approved.
The public is invited to attend the Sergeant Danny C. Hayes Memorial Highway dedication ceremony scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. It will take place at the intersection of State Route 141 and State Route 217, about 2 miles east of Kitts Hill. (Note: Seating is limited, so bring a chair.)
Mr. Dave Dunfee, a retired teacher who taught at Windsor High School, will be the guest speaker.
