Getting up and down the floor got the score going up. Pushing for and getting an up-tempo game, the Chesapeake Lady Panthers held on to beat the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 76-71 Monday.

Despite the offensive output, Chesapeake coach Chad Belville wasn’t totally happy.

"We wanted to turn up the tempo and run the floor, but we were hoping our defense would be better than 71 points," Belville said.

"We couldn’t run an up-tempo and used just five girls, so we ran nine girls in-and-out and six were freshmen and sophomores. Our young kids played really well."

Emily Delimpo turned in a monster game with 31 points and 27 rebounds as Chesapeake improved to 3-2.

Erin Sutphin scored 20 points and Jennifer Rice added 10. Lisa Perry had nine assists.

"I can’t say enough about our seniors. Emily and Erin had 51 of our 76 points. They stepped up tonight," Belville said.

Ironton (1-4) placed four players in double figures. Andrea Rudmann scored 16, Ashley Hannon scored 14, Maria Frazer had 13, and Candace Ferguson added 12.

Delimpo scored seven points and Sutphin six the first quarter as Chesapeake went up 20-19. Rudmann scored nine points including a 3-pointer to keep Ironton close.

Ironton came back to take a 38-34 halftime lead thanks to Hannon who had all her points the first half.

But Chesapeake came back the third quarter and held Ironton to eight points. Delimpo scored six points and Sutphin hit a 3-pointer to give Chesapeake the lead for good and it was 48-46 after three quarters.

"The third quarter we came out and tried to make an effort to step up the defense and we forced them into turnovers," Belville said. "Sutphin’s 3-pointer was a really big shot."

Delimpo got 12 more points and Sutphin six the fourth quarter as Chesapeake outscored Ironton 28-25. But Sutphin hit 4-of-4 from the line down the stretch to seal the win.
