Wood, who has been the superintendent at the school for the last decade and has been with the district for almost 30 years, said he was announcing his retirement at tonight’s meeting. Wood said there are different issues as to why he is leaving and, as of this morning, he had not prepared any official comment, but added that many of the reasons are personal.

He said the school board has been informally notified of his decision to step away from the job. Wood said he is asking the board to accept his retirement which would last until his contract expires on July 31.

Although he is retiring from the Chesapeake system, Wood said his days as an educator may not be over, stating he could be looking for another position.

"No one knows the future," Wood said.
