David Schug was slowed down, but not stopped. Held to just five points the first three quarters, Schug scored 14 points the fourth quarter to help rally the Rock Hill Redmen past the St. Joe Flyers 54-47 Friday.

"We held him to five points going into the fourth quarter and then he got hot on us," Flyers coach Adam Simpson said of Schug.

Besides Schug’s 19 points, Rickie McDonie and Robbie McClellan scored 10 points each for the Redmen, 5-4.

Bill Dressel stayed hot from the field for most of the game for St. Joe as he drained five 3-pointers and led all scorers with 22 points. Chris Laber had 11 points and 11 rebounds while Dressel also had 11 rebounds along with three steals.

Rock Hill led 10-6 the first quarter, but then Dressel scored six points the second quarter including a 3-pointers as St. Joe took an 18-17 halftime lead.

St. Joe led by as many as nine points the third quarter before the Redmen closed the gap to 32-30 going into the fourth quarter.

The Flyers trailed 48-45 with 40 seconds to play after making a free throw, but Schug made 5-of-9 from the line down the stretch as he helped rally the Redmen.

"We had our chances. Their pressure defense just keeps after you. but I’m proud of this group. They never quit. It was a great game," Simpson said.

The Flyers played at Portsmouth East Saturday. Rock Hill hosts Coal Grove Tuesday in a conference game.
