In the first meeting this season, Drew Mains didn’t play as Ironton edged the Wayne Pioneers 59-57. Mains was in the lineup Tuesday and his presence was felt.

With Mains directing the action and dishing out the basketball, Ironton routed Wayne 71-50.

Mains had nine points, but more importantly he had seven assists that helped three other players reach double figures.

Josh Sands and Aaron Quinn, considered by coach Chris Barnes as the "other" point guards, finished with 20 and 13 points, respectively. Derique Bacon had the best all-around game of his career with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals.

"With Drew and Sands and Quinn, we really have three point guards in the lineup," said Barnes. "Tonight we did a better job of being patient on offense and driving the lane and getting the ball to the right people. We weren’t forcing shots."

Ironton (8-5) also dominated on the boards with a 35-22 rebound advantage including 15 on the offensive glass. Besides Bacon, Tommy Lutz had seven rebounds.

Wayne was led by Tracy Jackson with 14 points and six rebounds. Justin Clagg had 11 points.

The Fighting Tiger jumped in front 5-0 and later went on a 9-0 run to build a 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Ironton led by as many as 18 points the second quarter and it was 31-18 at the half.

The Pioneers went on a 6-0 run to begin the second half to make it 32-23, but Mains hit a 15-footer to halt the run and his layup with 1:41 left in the quarter pushed the lead to 45-25.

Andrew Harvey’s 3-pointer and Mains’ layup with 30 seconds on the clock extended the spread to 50-27 before a layup by Wayne’s John Pasley made it 50-29.

A three-point play by Clagg got Wayne as close as 52-36 with 6:05 left, but Quinn sank 6-of-7 from the line and Sands made three straight layups to go along with a layup by Bacon and suddenly it was 66-36 with 3:55 left.
