Leading scorer Shane Holsinger had 21 points, but it was Bryan Maggard who poured in 28 points that sparked the Pointers to a 78-70 win over the upset-minded Coal Grove Hornets Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"It was a war. They got after it out there. They just had too many bullets for us," Hornets coach Darrell Humphreys said. "Maggard was the difference in the game."

Donte Pennington added 10 points and seven rebounds, Holsinger and Maggard grabbed six rebounds each, and Justin Eaches passed out eight assists for the Pointers, 9-5 and 4-1.

Brandon Waller and Eric Tackett scored 14 points each and Justin Gibson had 13 to lead the Hornets, 3-13 and 0-5 in the OVC.

"Coal Grove played a great game. They killed us on the boards and really faceguarded Shane all over the floor. Give them a lot of credit," Pointers coach Mark Lafon said.

South Point led 19-11 after the first quarter only to have Coal Grove battled back to trail just 33-32 at the half.

Coal Grove went ahead 37-33 to begin the second half. Maggard then took charge as he hit two straight baskets to give the Pointers the lead for good. He scored eight points in the quarter and the lead was 54-46 entering the final stanza.

J. J. Hunt hit a pair of 3-pointers and Brandon Waller hit another trifecta on three straight possessions as Coal Grove got within five points.

But Maggard had 10 points in the quarter including 4-of-4 from the line down the stretch to help the Pointers escape with the win.

On Friday, South Point hosts Huntington St. Joe while Coal Grove entertains Fairland in an OVC game.
