PEDRO -The Rock Hill basketball meant a lot to Vera Murnahan. But Vera Murnahan also meant a lot to the Rock Hill basketball program.

Murnahan, a former Rock Hill teacher and long time scorekeeper for the Redmen, died Thursday night after a bout with cancer.

The Redmen basketball team paid tribute to Murnahan Friday night as they dedicated their game to her memory, and they did it with a 73-65 win over the South Point Pointers in the final Ohio Valley Conference game of the season.

It was also the final game in the Redmen gym. Rock Hill opens a new school next fall.

"We said before the game that we were going to dedicate the game to Mrs. Murnahan," Redmen coach Marty Mills said.

"Her goal was to keep score in the first game of the new gym. That’s not going to happen now, so we said what better tribute than to give her the game ball of the last game in this gym."

David Schug had 19 points to lead the Redmen who finished 13-7 on the season and tied with South Point for second in the OVC at 5-3.

Isaac Kitchen scored 12 points and Rickie McDonie added 10 for the Redmen.

Shane Holsinger scored 35 points including 25 in the fourth quarter to lead South Point, 12-8 and 5-3. Bryan Maggard had 15 points.

"Our defensive intensity was better. Our kids are starting to understand that we need that. Everything stems off our defense. That’s something we can control," said Mills.

"We haven’t had real good intensity the past few games. I was real pleased with our defense. And offensively we got the ball to the open man. We had eight different people score and we scored in a lot of different fashions. I felt our offense really clicked."

Rock Hill led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and 28-17 at the half.

The Redmen stretched the lead to 46-31 after three quarters. That’s when Holsinger got hot and scored 25 points in the fourth quarter.

But Schug had 13 points in the quarter as Rock Hill held on for the win.
