SOUTH POINT – Students at South Point High School took a little time Monday to pat themselves on the back for a job well done.

On Saturday, students in several different competitions brought home trophies and a the bragging rights for their school.

The Academic Team participated in the Marshall University SCORES Festival and took first place in Division III, which includes fellow Lawrence County schools, Ironton, Rock Hill and Fairland, and schools from across the river in West Virginia and Kentucky.

Gara Williams, a SCORES team member, received high honors at the contest. Williams received the Robert Wheeler Scholarship as the "Outstanding Student" at the SCORES Festival. The Wheeler scholarship, is in memory of a South Point educator who was the SCORES coach for several years at the school.

The scholarship, which is open to any participant at the SCORES festival, includes a one-year tuition waiver for the 2002-03 academic year and $1,000 per year for four years.

The school’s cheerleader competition team also took the top spot in their division at the 2002 OASSA Class AA NonMount Cheerleader State Championship.

And, on March 2, three members of the school’s track team placed in the Ohio Indoor Track and Field competition at The Ohio State University.

Zach Smith took first place in the 800 meter race, Dennis Wilson took fourth in the high jump, and Patrick McCleary took sixth in the hurdles.
