Patrol reports safe weekend

Lawrence County enjoyed a safe Memorial Day weekend, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

&uot;It was a good weekend because it was quiet,&uot; Sgt. J.R. Smith said. &uot;It was busy, but it was a safe weekend in Lawrence County.&uot;

Statistics for the holiday weekend are from midnight Thursday to midnight Sunday.

Approximately 800 citations were issued in Lawrence County, 216 of these were for failure to wear seat belts. Other violations included speeding, following too close, no operator’s license and failure to yield, Smith said.

There were nine automobile crashes. Only one involved injuries and these were minor. Seven people were arrested for DUI.

The Highway Patrol also assisted 85 stranded vehicles.

Data from across the state showed that 12 people were killed in traffic crashes. Alcohol was involved in six cases, not involved in three and unknown in three others.
