Jr. Hornets win despite mud

In what could have been referred to as the Mud Bowl turned out to be a 20-0 win for the Coal Grove Junior Hornets.

With the game played in a steady rain, the Rock Hill Junior Redmen lost five fumbles while Coal Grove never had a turnover in post the win.

Coal Grove opened up the scoring late in the first quarter when Eric Davidson connected with Trent Blankenship for a 30-yard touchdown pass and it was 6-0.

The score remained the same until a turnover got the Hornets in scoring position again. Coal Grove recovered a fumble at the Redmen 30 and five plays later Matt Cooper ran 10 yards for the touchdown and it was 12-0.

Rock Hill drove to the Hornet 24 before being stopped on downs.

Coal Grove then sealed the win by gong 76 yards in just three plays highlighted by Cooper-s 65-yard run and capped by Davidson's 1-yard sneak. Blankenship added the conversion run and it was 20-0.

Cooper had 109 yards on 16 carries and R. C. Lewis had 25 yards on four tries to lead the Hornets.

Davidson was 3 of 7 passing for 68 yards as he threw for one score and passed for another.

Mark Robinson had nine tackles and Cooper six to lead the defense that held the Redmen to 81 total yards.

Coal Grove hosts Boyd County, Ky., Thursday. From staff reports
