Lady Tigers top Rock Hill

Ironton first-year coach Amy Hughes was just hoping her Lady Fighting Tigers would turn the corner. Instead, they turned completely around.

Ironton lost by 56 points in its second meeting last season against Rock Hill. The Lady Tigers forgot the past as they beat the Redwomen 51-37 Monday.

The Lady Fighting Tigers used balanced scoring and a stingy defense to win its second game in as many outings this season.

"This was a big, big turnaround for the girls. They played so hard. I'm just so proud of them," Hughes said. "Rock Hill has a nice team, so we wanted to contest every shot on defense and control the tempo on offense."

Candace Ferguson had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Andrea Rudmann scored 13 points, had five rebounds, five rebounds, and two steals to lead the win.

Also for Ironton, Ashley Hannon was 8 of 8 from the line, had seven rebounds, and four assists while Sara Hacker 8 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Miranda Edwards scored 12 points and Ashley Harris 7 to pace Rock Hill (1-1).

The Redwomen struggled with their shooting, making just 15 of 61 shots for 24.6 percent. After jumping out to a 17-11 first quarter lead, the Redwomen were 0-for-12 the second quarter and made just one foul shot in falling behind 23-18.

"We wanted to get into a running game, and we did that the first quarter, but then we started to miss our shots, and we never could get into our press," Rock Hill coach Bob Wilds said. "We couldn't buy a basket, but you have nights like that."

Edwards made a layup at the end of the first quarter, but Rock Hill managed just a foul shot at the 3:47 mark of the second quarter as Ironton came back to take the lead.

Hacker followed up her own shot with 18 seconds left in the third quarter to put Ironton up 35-27.

Rudmann's 18-footer and steal and layup stretched the cushion to 39-27 to start the fourth quarter and two free throws by Hannon with 1:59 to play gave Ironton its biggest lead at 48-31.
