Rock Hill gives good effort in conference victory over River Valley, 53-41

CHESHIRE -- Good was good enough.

Rock Hill coach Marty Mills said the Redmen didn't play their best game, but they played well enough as they beat the River Valley Raiders 53-41 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Mills said the effort was especially significant because of the difficulty teams have winning on the Raiders court.

"We didn't play a real good game, but we played a solid game. Any time you go up there and win, that's a good game. That's a hard place to play," Mills said.

Rock Hill was coming off a win on Wednesday. Mills wasn't sure how the team would respond on just one day's rest.

"We didn't have the intensity, but we led the whole game. It was a little out of our routine, and you never know about your legs," Mills said.

Dave Schug scored 23 points and had seven rebounds as Rock Hill ran its record to 8-8 and 4-3 in the OVC. Rickie McDonie had 15 points and seven rebounds.

Jared Swain scored 11 for the Raiders (5-8, 4-3).

McDonie had 8 points and Gabe Ruggles, who was plagued most of the game with foul trouble, scored 6 points in the first quarter as Rock Hill took a 13-8 lead.

"Mitch Kerns came in and did a real good job defensively again, and Ruggles had a real nice start," Mills said. "This was one of those games where our kids eliminated big runs."

Each team scored 11 in the second quarter and it was 34-19 at the break.

Schug and McDonie combined for 11 points in the third quarter to make it 39-33.

Schug got 10 points in the fourth quarter and the defense held the Raiders to just 8 points.

The win was the sixth in the last eight games for the Redmen. Mills has been pleased with the team's improvement.

"We started 2-6 and now we've gone 6-2. That's a nice improvement when you've got a young team. Our guys have battled and now we have a chance for a winning record. The last six or seven games, our kids haven't given up when it could have been real easy," Mills said.

In the reserve game, River Valley won 37-33. Brian Skaggs had 15 points for the Redmen. Colby Reese led River Valley with 14 points, and Chris Roush 12.
