Where can you sample more than two dozen kinds of chili in one place? At the annual MR/DD Chili Fest this weekend.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 26 different chefs are expected to attend the fourth-annual event, which will be held at Tri State Industries, Inc., 606 Carlton Lane, Coal Grove. For only $1, the community can be tastetesters of the chili. Activities will also include 17 craft booths, musical entertainment, children's activities, door prizes and more.

Each year, the event grows. The first year about 100 people attended. Last year, more than 850 came out. In addition to the good food and entertainment, those who come to the event can find out more about the Lawrence County Board of MR/DD and the consumers it serves.

The purpose of the event is not to raise money, but to raise awareness. It coincides with MR/DD Awareness month, which is being observed in March.

The chili entries are divided into three categories - consumers, family and staff; businesses and organizations; and the media. The public will also have the opportunity to pick their favorite recipe through the People's Choice award.

And, as diverse as the chefs are, so are the recipes - no two chilis will taste alike. It is highly likely some unique blends will be entered again this year (last year, one batch had a beer and chocolate combination).

No matter what your tastes are, chances are you will find one - if not several - kinds of chili you will enjoy. And the best thing is you will be supporting a good cause in the process.

The annual MR/DD Chili Fest should be a fun time for all. We encourage everyone to attend the event. Bring your appetite - and your antacid if you have a weak stomach.
