It is once again time for some spring cleaning as Ironton residents can take advantage of the city's annual Spring Cleanup.

The program begins Monday. Dumpsters will be available at the city's garage at 303 Hecla St. from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. everyday until May 4.

"The whole idea this year is to make it a convenience for the citizens," Mayor Bob Cleary said. "Spring Cleanup gives residents a good start on cleaning up their residences and property."

Dumping will be monitored by city employees. Contractors are not allowed to dump construction waste and no tires or items with freon such has air conditioners, freezers and refrigerators, will be accepted.

If residents absolutely have no way to haul the materials, they can call the mayor's office at 532-3833 to be put on a list. However, Cleary said it could take some time to pick everything up, and encouraged anyone who could to haul it themselves to do so.

For larger loads, citizens can obtain a free pass at the water works department in the Ironton City Center to dump at Green Valley Environmental landfill in Boyd County, Ky., Cleary said.

Last year, the city tried to provide curbside pick up, but it took six or seven weeks and the city could not accommodate the citizens quick enough, he said.

"I think it will work out for everyone if it is a community effort and and an effort the city will be making as well," he said. "For the past several years we have been short on manpower, maybe this is a way to get the community involved and take pride in their property."
