OHSAA announces 2003 division breakdown for football playoff system

With the end of the school year brings spring sports tournaments. It also

brings something for the fall: the football divisional breakdowns.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has set the football divisions based on the male enrollment for grades 10-12 next season.

Division I

is for schools with 514 boys and up. Div. II is for 353-513, Div. III 262-352, Div. IV 184-261, Div. V 131-183, and Div. VI 130 boys or less.

Area teams will have Ironton, Rock Hill, South Point, Fairland, RIver Valley, Portsmouth West and Portsmouth in Div. IV, Coal Grove, Chesapeake and Wheelersburg in Div. V, and Symmes Valley and Green in Div. VI.

Gallipolis is in Div. III along with Fairfield Union which was in Div. IV last season, losing to Ironton in the first round.

Rucker, Gossett honored

Matt Rucker and Aaron Gossett posted solid points per game averages, but it was their grade point averages that earned them their latest honor.

The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association announced its Academic All-Ohio team and both Gossett and Rucker were named to the boys Division III team.

Rucker had a 4.0 GPA to go along with 8.5 points per game. Gossett had a 3.76 GPA while scoring at a 14.5 clip.

The duo helped Chesapeake's team finish tied for ninth overall in the state with a 3.64 team GPA.

Reds Legends Clinic

Some of the past stars of the Cincinnati Reds have a few tips for young baseball players.

The Cincinnati Reds Legends three-day youth baseball clinic will be held June 23-25 at VFW Baseball Field in Marietta. Youths ages 5-19 are eligible to attend.

Featured speakers are former Reds manager and Hall of Famer Sparky Anderson, and six former players including third baseman Nick Esasky, outfielder Herm Winningham, outfielder Tracy Jones, and pitchers Frank Pastore, Pat Darcy and Brad "The Animal" Lesley.

All campers registered by June 17 receive an autographed Sparky Anderson 1976 World Champion Cincinnati Reds lithograph. T-shirts are available for $15 from sizes small through 3X.
