ROME TOWNSHIP- Speed is believed to be the cause of a one-car accident Sunday evening in Rome Township.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Thomas Hacker said the driver, Christopher L. Powers, 22, of Proctorville, was traveling too fast on LaBelle-Bartramsville Road when he encountered a bump in the road and lost control of the vehicle.

Hacker said Powers' car left the right side of the road, spun around, reentered the road and then went across the pavement and off the left side of the road. At that time, the vehicle struck a utility pole and caught fire.

Another motorist on that roadway, Lee Edwards, also of Proctorville, witnessed the accident and helped Powers free himself from the burning wreck.

Powers was taken to Cabell-Huntington Hospital, where he was treated and released. Hacker said a citation will be issued in connection with the accident.
