ROME TOWNSHIP - A 4-year-old girl who was attacked by a dog late last week in Rome Township is recuperating at home now.
However, the girl's 3-year-old brother remains hospitalized. A nursing supervisor at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., said the
boy's condition has been upgraded from critical to serious, but he remains in the hospital's intensive care unit.
The children were attacked Friday afternoon by what is believed to be a shepherd/wolf hybrid.
Authorities believe the children were playing on a swing set in the yard of a residence on Big Paddy Road, and the dog was chained up in the same yard. At some point, the children came into contact with the dog. Witnesses told authorities that considerable force had to be used to pull the dog away from the children to rescue them.
The dog remains at the Lawrence County Dog Pound pending the outcome of an investigation.
"He's pretty docile," Lawrence County Dog Warden Bill Click said. "He does a lot of pacing. he looks more like a wolf than anything to me."
