WV Thunder 13u head for nationals

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. -- The sizzling play of the West Virginia Thunder has them in the Sunshine State.

The 13-and-under AAU girls basketball team won the state tournament and will head for the Division II National Championships in Florida.

The Thunder finished pool play with two wins and one loss, that a 58-48 setback to the Parkersburg Patriots.

However, the Thunder advanced into tournament play and handily avenged their loss to the Patriots in the semifinals, 52-36.

Three girls have committed to play in the nationals including Melissa Wheeler of South Point, Alexas Poston of Proctorville, and Chinwe Okoro of Russell, Ky.

West Virginia Thunder 52:

Chinwe Okoro 27, Nichole Madison 11, Britney Clark 6, Melissa Wheeler 5, Tiffeny Whitt 3.

Parkersburg South 36:

Amanda Trong 12, Spangler 6, Kelly 6, Haverty 4, Ayers 4, Gilkerson 2, Williams 2.

15u Thunder advance

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Alyssa Hammond tossed in 31 points as the West Virginia Thunder defeated the Massachusetts Bay State Magic 87's 59-44 in the 15-and-under AAU girls National Championship.

The Thunder finished pool play with a 3-0 record.

In the six years at the nationals, the Thunder has an 18-0 record in pool play.

Championship play will begin for the 40 teams who advanced into the championship round on Monday.

Sarah Tokodi had 7 assists in the game and Brittany Holestine had 6.

Thunder team members are: Jessica Craft of South Point, Keisa Davis and Alyssa Hammond of Oak Hill, Katie Donahoe of Minford, Sarah Tokodi of Parkersburg (W.Va.) Catholic, Brittany Holestine of George Washington (Charleston, W.Va.), A.J. Starcher of Williamstown, W.Va., and Courtney McComas and Laquita Wilburn of Huntington, W.Va.
