A native of Beckley, Reed received his master's degree in athletic administration from Marshall in 1999.
He is a graduate of Mountain State University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in environmental studies in 1998.
"Marshall has always been a very special place to me," Reed said. "Even when I left there I always hoped my career would lead me back home, and I am excited now that it has. I am looking forward to the challenges that await me in this position."
MU Director of Athletics Bob Marcum made the announcement.
"We are excited that David has decided to return to our athletic department," Marcum said.
Reed replaces Michael Bianchin, who had held the position for the last four years. Bianchin left Marshall for a position with Eli Lilly and Company.
"It was a wonderful opportunity for Mike," Marcum said. "He did a great job for Marshall and our department."
