Dragons pick off East

SCIOTOVILLE - The only thing that could come between the Portsmouth East Tartans and a victory was Fairland's Tyler Bowman.

And he did.

Bowman intercepted three passes and Fairland forced five turnovers in beating the Tartans 19-6 Friday.

"The defense played well," Fairland coach Bryan Ward said. "Matt Dawson played well and stopped the run well on the right side, and the secondary played well. Tyler Bowman had a great game."

Two more interceptions helped stop East drives. Sam Huff and Bowman each came up with interceptions in the end zone.

Bowman's first interception started the first scoring drive as Fairland went 84 yards in 11 plays capped by Michael Hill's 1-yard scoring plunge. Hill kicked the conversion point for a 7-0 lead.

Fairland went 83 yards in 14 plays just before half to go up 13-0. Hill hit Huff with a 15-yard scoring strike on a fourth and goal play. The conversion failed and it was 13-0.

East suffered a key blow in the second quarter as quarterback Brett Enz was injured on a 43-yard punt return. He did not return.

The punt return put East in scoring position with a first and goal, but the Fairland defense held.

Ricky Henderson had a 29-yard punt return in the third quarter that set up East's only score. Henderson capped the drive with a 13-yard run and it was 13-6.

But Fairland answered as Bowman broke free on a 58-yard scoring run around right end with 1:58 left in the third quarter and the defense took over from that point.

Fairland had 260 total yards with 213 coming on the ground. East was held to 158 yards, 87 on the ground.

Bowman finished with 96 yards on 16 carries and fullback C.J. Stewart had 91 yards on 15 attempts.

"Our line blocked well tonight," Ward said. "Both sides of the line played well. They did a good job of opening

up holes so we could move the ball."

The Dragons are now 3-1 with the win and host Meigs Friday.

"I'm happy to be off to 3-1 start. Everyone is starting to come together and play well. (Coach) John (McClung) is doing an outstanding job with the defense," Ward said.

East is now 2-2.
