MOUNT HOPE, W.Va. - Going back to basics got the South Point Pointers offense going.

After failing to score an offensive touchdown the first three games, South Point racked up seven touchdown Friday night in a 48-8 spanking of Mount Hope.

"We went back to basics," Pointers coach Dan McDavid said. "We just ran the ball. Chris Weaver, Wes Runyon, Chris Brown, Ben Starkey, Nick (Josh) McKenzie and Seth Craft just put a hat on somebody and drove them back. It was good, old smash mouth football. The kids did a good job. It was a total team victory."

The Pointers amassed 428 yards of offense including 399 on the ground. Fullback Chris Chapman ran 13 times for 175 yards and two touchdowns to lead the ground game.

Tailback Caleb Copley ran 12 times for 86 yards and two scores while Justin Workman added 38 yards on nine attempts and caught a pass for 29 yards.

"It makes a difference when you can generate some offense. That goes back to the kids. They played hard," McDavid said.

Chapman's 1-yard run with 8:22 left in the first quarter but South Point ahead 7-0 after Zane Joy's conversion kick.

Quarterback Tommy Hayner had a 10-yard touchdown run late in the quarter that extended the lead to 14-0.

Wes Patterson recovered a muffed punt with time running out, and Caleb Copley broke loose on an 18-yard scoring run to make it 21-0.

Copley's second touchdown run midway through the second quarter put the Pointers lead at 27-0.

South Point put the game away early in the second half when Chapman squirted free en route to a 65-yard touchdown run. Joy's kick set the lead at 34-0,

Backup Rocky Roe had a 5-yard touchdown run just before the end of the third quarter and it was 41-0.

Mount Hope got on the scoreboard with 8:11 to play, but Pointers Aaron Patterson had an 8-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring and put an exclamation point on the offensive

performance

Workman had an interception along with his pass reception.
