The unfamiliar became too familiar for the Ironton Fighting Tigers.

Ironton spent the past week getting a look at a variety of golf courses and teams in splitting four matches.

Ironton beat Portsmouth on its home course by 14 strokes, then came home and edged Greenup County, Ky., by two strokes.

The Fighting Tigers lost by a single stroke on the road to Ashland, Ky., and stumbled to Unioto at the Chillicothe Jaycees Golf Course.

"We're getting better," Ironton coach Jeff Kerns said. "We've played some pretty tough courses and some pretty good teams down the stretch. We're young and we're not familiar with the courses, so I'm pleased with our performances."

Dennis Gagai led Ironton in three matches as he shot a 37 against Greenup and Portsmouth, then had a 40 against Ashland. His 37 totals earned him medalist honors.

Justin Gillum's 40 led Ironton in the match at Chillicothe to miss medalist honors by one stroke.

Gillum also had a 42 and 41 during the four-match stretch along with a 45. Seth Christian played well for Ironton as he carded a 38 against Portsmouth and had a 39 in the win over Greenup.

"We're starting to get some consistent play. If we can concentrate and discipline ourselves mentally, we've got a chance in the tournament," said Kerns.

Ironton plays in the Division II sectional tournament Monday at Shawnee State Golf Course.
