Timberlake adds running game help as Wheelersburg blanks Waverly

WHEELERSBURG - Maybe Nathan Timberlake is the added dimension the Wheelersburg Pirates have been looking for all season.

Most of Wheelersburg's offense this season has come from the running and passing of quarterback Tom Kaskey. But Friday night, Timberlake stepped up and ran 18 times for 100 yards to help the Pirates blank the Waverly Tigers 17-0 in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Timberlake is the first Pirate player to reach the century mark in rushing this season. His efforts helped Wheelersburg improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the SOC.

Kaskey had another solid game as he completed 7 of 13 passes for 96 yards. He ran for one touchdown and kicked a 27-yard field goal. Matt Ruggles had 62 yards rushing on 14 attempts and scored a touchdown.

"I thought our running game was much better this evening," Pirates second-year coach Tony Lewis said. "We rushed for 187 yards and I thought our running backs ran hard. Defensively, I thought we did a real good job of shutting out Waverly."

The Pirates defense forced four turnovers, intercepting three passes and recovering a fumble.

Kaskey's 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and conversion kick gave the Pirates a 7-0 lead. He kicked his field goal later in the quarter and it was 10-0 at the half.

Ruggles had a 12-yard scoring run in the third quarter that extended the lead to 17-0 and the defense made it stand.

The Pirates visit Northwest Friday in an SOC game.
