Panthers use strong second half to get win

COAL GROVE - Someone tell the Chesapeake Panthers there are four quarters in a football game, not two.

After struggling the first half once again, the Panthers came to life in the second half once again and pulled away from the Coal Grove Hornets for a 45-14 Ohio Valley Conference win Friday.

"What they do doesn't go well with what we do defensively," Panthers coach Phil Davis said. "We didn't do what we wanted, so we changed things in the second quarter. I don't know if that helped."

Coupled with Rock Hill's 21-7 loss to Fairland, the win locked up at least a share of the league championship for the Panthers. Chesapeake is 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the league. A win over Rock Hill next Friday would give the Panthers the league title outright, a loss would leave the two teams tied for first place.

"We didn't want to overlook anyone. Coal Grove's kids played hard," Davis said. "Now we're looking at Rock Hill and everyone in the league is

pretty even. Just look at what happened (Friday) night. We're in the same situation as last year. We need to win this last game."

The Hornets made things interesting the first half.

Coal Grove opened the game with a time-consuming 76-yard drive that chewed up more than nine minutes off the clock. Quarterback Ryan Turvey capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run and Nick Bazell's conversion kick put the Hornets up 7-0.

But Chesapeake came right back in just two plays. Keith Marcum ran 43 yards on first down, and Jackson Caynor dashed the final 12 yards for the touchdown. The conversion kick was blocked and Coal Grove led 7-6.

Coal Grove came right back with a 59-yard scoring drive following the kickoff, this time with Turvey passing 9 yards to Patrick Roush for the touchdown. Bazell's conversion kick upped the lead to 14-6.

The Hornets fumbled a pitch on their next possession and the Panthers recovered. Justin Finley ran 11 yards for a touchdown on a keeper and the deficit was now 14-12. The conversion run failed.

Unable to move the ball, Coal Grove punted and Cody Hunt returned the kick 57 yards for a touchdown and the Panthers now had the lead at 18-14.

"More than anything else, that was the play that turned the game," Davis said.

The second half was all Chesapeake.

Hunt returned the kickoff 49 yards to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Marcum. Finley's conversion kick made it 25-14.

It was Hunt once again doing the damage as he bolted 45 yards for a touchdown and extended the lead to 32-14.

Finley had his second 11-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter that extended the lead to 39-14.

Backup Kersten Harris had a 6-yard scoring run late in the fourth quarter that set the final score at 45-14.

Hunt finished with 97 yards on just 10 carries to lead the Chesapeake ground game. Marcum added 75 yards on seven attempts.

"Offensively, that was one of our better games," Davis said.

Justin Hyland had 91 yards on 24 carries and Cody Chaffin added 51 yards on five attempts.

Chesapeake can not only wrap up an OVC title next week with a win, but also a home game to begin the Division V playoffs.
