"Martins Ferry was the better team. They'll go a long way in the playoffs," Fairland coach Bryan Ward said.

The Dragons, 7-4, were making their second playoff appearance and first in 10 years. Ward said that execution was the downfall of his team.

"Our kids gave the effort, we just didn't execute. We would be third-and-one or third-and-two and it would be fourth-and five," Ward said. "We hit a couple of receivers in the hands and dropped the ball, we have a bad snap on a punt and get off a bad kick that helps them score. We just didn't execute and you can't do that in the playoffs. Everyone is a good team."

Trevor Bruney led the Martins Ferry ground game that amassed 387 yards. Bruney ran 20 times for 172 yards while Kyle Ray had 78 yards on six tries, Chas Yoder 69 on 11 attempts and Luke Warren ran seven times for 59 yards.

Quarterback Ryan Church was 8-of-12 for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

C.J. Stewart topped Fairland with 51 yards on 13 rushes. Quarterback Michael Hill was 2-of-7 for 79 yards including a touchdown strike to Chance Adkins.

The Purple Riders went 65 yards in five plays to start the scoring. Church hit Bopp with a 35-yard pass and it was 6-0.

Bruney's 12-yard scoring run as time expired in the first quarter capped a long 13-play, 90-yard drive. Church ran for the conversion and it was 14-0.

The score didn't change until late in the half. Bruney broke loose on a 46-yard run on the second play following a Fairland punt. Bopp passed to Bruney on the conversion for a 22-0 lead.

A blocked punt at the 38 set up a 1-yard scoring run by Yoder with just 15 seconds left in the half. Bruney added the conversion and it was 30-0.

Martins Ferry went 85 yards in eight plays on its first possession of the second half to extend the lead to 36-0. Ray's 6-yard run capped the drive.

Fairland came back with its only score on the first play following the kickoff as Hill and Chance clicked on a 58-yard pass.

But less than two minutes later, Church hit Bopp with a 51-yard pass and Yoder's conversion pushed the lead to 44-6.

The Purple Riders got two fourth quarter scores on a 39-yard run by Ray and a 15-yard scamper by Warren.
