GALLIPOLIS - Now, that's better.

After winning just one game last season and averaging only 25 points a game, the Coal Grove Lady Hornet got off to quite a start Monday with a 56-34 win over the Ohio Valley Christian Lady Defenders.

Chelsea Markins led Coal Grove in her high school debut with 14 points. Holli Swarts and Maggie Young added 10 points each.

Alyssa Zirille topped Ohio Valley Christian with 11 points.

OVC jumped in front 19-14

in the first quarter as Zirille scored 7 points.

But Coal Grove came storming back the second quarter to surge ahead 29-26 at the half as Young scored 8 of her points.

Markins and Swarts combined for 9 points in the third quarter and the defense held OVC to 4 points to extend the lead to 40-30.

Coal Grove limited the Defenders to 4 points again in the fourth quarter to coast to the season-opening win.

The Lady Hornets play at Portsmouth Notre Dame Wednesday.
