KINNIKINNICK - The South Point Pointers did just about everything they wanted. Except win.

Struggling with their foul shooting, the Pointers dropped a tough 46-45 decision to the Zane Trace Pioneers Friday in the Pioneer Tip Off Classic.

"I'm disappointed that we lost, but we did the right things and we played hard," Pointers coach Mark Lafon said. "If we just made 50 percent of our foul shots we win the game."

South Point was able to connect on just 10 of 24 free throw attempts.

Making foul shots gave Zane Trace the win.

Trey Baker sank the second of two foul shots with 16 seconds left

to put the Pioneers up 46-45. The Pointers then missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

After Zane Trace went up 40-35 with 5:09 to play, the Pointers held the Pioneers scoreless for two and one-half minutes and got within 40-39.

But Baker hit a 3-pointer to end the draught and sank a free throw for a 44-41 lead. Caleb Copley scored to get the Pointers within 44-43 and the defense forced a turnover with Seth Craft getting fouled. Craft converted both free throw attempts to put South Point ahead with 1:42 to play.

Baker was fouled on the inbounds play and made one of two free throws to tie it at 45, thus setting up the exciting finish.

Craft scored 6 points on a pair of long-range 3-pointers as the Pointers took an 11-7 lead the first quarter. But the Pioneers came back to take a 19-18 halftime lead.

"The second quarter we got tired and our defense broke down," Lafon said.

Zane Trace pushed its way to a 33-30 lead after three quarter and led by as many as five in the final quarter before the Pointers battled back.

Copley scored 11 points and Craft 10 to lead the Pointers. Baker had 17 points and Cody Lawhorn 15 for Zane Trace.
