SOUTH POINT - Coach Mark Lafon explained the game plan. The South Point Pointers listened and they listened well.

Executing to perfection for most of the game, the Pointers knocked off the Portsmouth East Tartans 72-55 Saturday night.

"We played with so much intensity and we played the game plan out so well," Lafon said. "We did exactly what we want to for three quarters."

The Pointers built a commanding 26-point lead after three quarters. East exploded for 32 points in the fourth quarter thanks to seven 3-point goals, but South Point scored 23 points of its own to even its record at 1-1 on the season.

"We played real well for three quarters, then in the fourth quarter we began to turn the ball over and they got hot," Lafon said.

"I told the kids that East was going to start pressuring us and I sensed we were starting to lose our intensity. They made a run, but we showed some poise and hit some big free throws."

South Point made 13 of 16 from the line in the fourth quarter including five straight by Justin Workman.

"That's not bad from the free throw line," Lafon said.

Jay Graham led the Pointers with 19 points. Caleb Copley had 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Workman finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

"Copley, Workman and Jay Graham all played well in a lot of different ways," Lafon said.

Dan Downey scored 20 points and J.D. King 16 to pace East, 2-1.

Lafon was impressed with the defensive effort of Aaron Quinn on East leading scorer Brent Enz who finished with just six points.

"Aaron Quinn did a great job shutting down Enz. We were worried about Enz because he is so strong," Lafon said.

Graham scored five points in the first quarter as the Pointers went up 9-6. Copley got six points in the second quarter to make it 28-14 at the half. Downey had 12 of East's first half points.

"Copley was in control, pushing the ball and finding the open man. He was really spreading the ball around," Lafon said.

The lead grew to 49-23 as Graham scored eight points in the third quarter.
