MERCERVILLE - No one likes to play on the road. Unless they win.

The Symmes Valley Vikings found life on the road to their liking Tuesday as they beat the South Gallia Rebels 65-57.

"It's good to go on the road and get a win," Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter said. "Any time you're playing in unfamiliar surroundings, it changes the way you play. We were up and down, but fortunately we were up at the right time."

Jarod Shafer scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Kyle Gilmore scored 18 points and had five assists to keep the Vikings unbeaten in three games.

Seth Colegrove pulled down 10 rebounds and Chris Elswick dished out six assists.

Jason Merrick scored 18 points and Brandon Caldwell 12 to lead South Gallia.

"South Gallia is a pretty good team. I saw them against Reedsville and they should have beaten them," Carpenter said.

Merrick and Gerald Cade scored six points each in the first quarter to give the Rebels a 21-18 lead. Gilmore and Shafer scored seven points each to keep the Vikings close.

Justin Holland and Colegrove had six points apiece in the second quarter as Symmes Valley rallied to take a 41-35 lead.

The Vikings managed only five points in the third quarter as South Gallia closed to within 46-45.

Gilmore and Shafer combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter while Merrick had 10 for South Gallia.

Shafer and Holland then scored over the final minute to secure the win.
