PEDRO - Win number one was good, but coach Marty Mills said it can be better.

The Rock Hill Redmen picked up their first win of the season Saturday by beating the Symmes Valley Vikings 58-48.

Mills was glad to get the win, but he said it wasn't their best effort.

"It's always nice to get that first win. We didn't play with a lot of defensive intensity, but we did some things pretty good," Mills said. "K.C. Christian and Zach Mullins stepped up. They both hit some big shots and everyone contributed."

Christian led the Redmen with a career-high 18 points. Zach Mullins added 11 points.

Mills said several players who contributed in other areas besides scoring.

"Roger Joseph had a good floor game. He had some assists, some steals and some rebounds. Derek Martin came off the bench and got some offensive rebounds and put backs for us. Sean Mullins did a good job defensively and hit a big shot for us," Mills said.

"T.J. Blagg came off the bench and sparked us with a big three. He's just a sophomore but he plays pretty hard."

Jarod Shafer had 16 points - all in the second half - and Chris Elswick scored 10 to lead the Vikings, 3-2.

Christian scored seven points and Mullins six in the first quarter as Rock Hill raced to a 16-5 lead.

Both teams scored eight points in the second quarter and it was 24-13 at the break.

Shafer had seven points in the third quarter as Symmes Valley closed to within 37-29.

But Christian knocked down nine points in the fourth quarter to match Shafer and the Redmen converted 9 of 14 from the line in the fourth quarter to help preserve their first win in three outings.

In the reserve game, Rock Hill won 42-38 as Brian Skaggs had 11 points and Mike Ison 10. J. Ferguson led the Vikings with 11.
